1. Overview of Handheld Jigsaw
a. What is a Handheld Jigsaw?
A handheld jigsaw, also known as a “handheld jigsaw,” is a type of power tool used to cut and shape materials such as wood, metal, plastic, and many other materials. The handheld jigsaw operates by moving a blade rapidly up and down, allowing the user to make curved cuts, arc cuts, or straight cuts as needed.
Handheld jigsaws are commonly used in fabrication, woodworking, repair, and various applications requiring precise and flexible cutting. The machine features a replaceable blade, allowing you to choose the appropriate blade for the material you are working with.
b. How a Handheld Jigsaw Works
The handheld jigsaw operates on a simple principle: it uses a blade moving rapidly up and down to cut through materials. Here is a detailed description of how the handheld jigsaw works:
- Motor: The handheld jigsaw is equipped with an electric or battery-powered motor that provides the necessary force to move the blade and cut through materials. The motor is usually controlled via a switch or trigger on the tool.
- Blade: The blade is a key component of the tool. It is attached to the motor and positioned vertically to cut through materials. Blades typically have teeth designed for cutting specific types of materials such as wood, metal, plastic, or laminated wood.
- Blade stroke: When activated, the motor generates a rapid up-and-down motion for the blade. The blade cuts through the material as it moves downward.
- Up-and-down motion: The vertical motion of the blade creates precise cutting. Instead of moving the jigsaw to cut, the user positions the blade at the starting point and guides it along the desired cut path.
- Control and safety: Handheld jigsaws usually have triggers or buttons to control the speed and stroke of the blade. They also include safety features such as blade guards and holders to prevent direct contact with the blade.
c. Industries Using Handheld Jigsaws
Handheld jigsaws are used across many manufacturing and application industries. Here are some examples:
- Woodworking: Handheld jigsaws are widely used in woodworking for cutting wood into parts, designing doors, windows, furniture, and other wood products.
- Construction: Jigsaws are used in construction to cut and install materials such as wood, plywood, insulation, and paneling.
- Metal fabrication: Jigsaws can cut thin metals such as sheet metal, pipes, and metal plates.
- Plastic and composite manufacturing: Handheld jigsaws are also used to cut and process plastics, composites, and similar materials.
- Repair and maintenance: They are useful tools for repair and maintenance, allowing workers to cut and adjust materials easily.
- Industrial and general manufacturing: Handheld jigsaws are applicable in various industries for cutting, shaping, and fabricating materials.
2. Overview of Safety Training for Operating a Handheld Jigsaw
a. What is Occupational Safety Training?
- Occupational safety training for operating a handheld jigsaw consists of sessions that equip workers with awareness and skills to prevent workplace accidents. Workers directly using the handheld jigsaw belong to Group 3.
- The safety training course helps workers identify and prevent hazards, reducing the risk of accidents while performing their tasks.

b. Training Duration
Initial Safety Training Duration:
- Total training time is at least 24 hours, including exams.
- 8 hours of theory on occupational safety laws and policies
- 8 hours of theory on basic occupational safety knowledge
- 4 hours of theory on specialized training content
- 2 hours of practical training on specialized content
- 2 hours of final theoretical assessment
The safety training center schedules multiple sessions based on workers’ availability. Typically, there are 6 sessions over 3 days if the company can arrange continuous training.
Periodic Safety Training Duration:
- Before the occupational safety card expires, workers who want renewal must complete a periodic safety training course, with duration at least 50% of the initial training time.
Explanation: The total periodic safety training time is at least 12 hours, including exams. Upon successful completion and passing the test, workers will have their occupational safety card renewed.

d. Occupational Safety Card
After completing the occupational safety training and passing the assessment, workers will be issued an occupational safety card (commonly referred to as Group 3 safety certificate).
The Group 3 safety card shows details such as name, date of birth, job, and work environment, along with training duration, official seal, and signature confirming completion of the course.
According to regulations in Clause 2, Article 24 of Decree 44/2016/ND-CP, there are two cases:
- If the employer and employee have an employment contract, the employer must sign, stamp, and affix a seal on the safety card after the employee completes the Group 3 training and passes the test.
- If the worker is freelance, temporary, or does not have an employment contract, the training unit must sign, stamp, and affix a seal on the safety card after completing the training and passing the test.

3. Hazards When Operating a Handheld Jigsaw
Operating a handheld jigsaw can pose several hazards to workers if safety rules are not followed and caution is not maintained. Here are some common hazards when using a handheld jigsaw:
- Saw blade injuries: The saw blade can cause serious injuries if safety rules are not followed. If the blade is not sharp enough or improperly installed, it may kick back or cause injury.
- Finger and hand injuries: Failing to follow safety rules may expose hands or fingers to the blade, resulting in severe injuries.
- Noise and vibration: Handheld jigsaws generate high noise levels and strong hand vibrations. Prolonged exposure can harm hearing and hand health.
- Dust and hazardous fumes: Cutting may produce wood or metal dust and hazardous fumes. Users must wear respiratory protection and work in well-ventilated areas.
- Fire and electrical hazards: Operating near flammable liquids or electrical sources can lead to fire or electrical accidents.
To ensure safety, workers should follow basic safety rules, including wearing safety glasses, cooling the blade properly, using respiratory filters, inspecting the jigsaw before use, and attending safety training. Additionally, following the manufacturer’s instructions and keeping the jigsaw in perfect working condition are crucial for safe operation.
4. Measures to Control Occupational Accidents When Operating a Handheld Jigsaw
To control occupational accidents when operating a handheld jigsaw, users must follow several important safety measures. Here are some measures for accident prevention when working with a handheld jigsaw:
- Training and guidance:
- Ensure all workers have the necessary knowledge and skills to operate the handheld jigsaw safely.
- Provide guidance on how to use the machine, including installing the blade and adjusting speed.
- Blade adjustment:
- Ensure the blade is properly installed and sharp enough.
- Regularly inspect the blade for cracks or damage.
- Personal protection:
- Always wear safety glasses to protect eyes from dust and debris.
- Use respiratory filters when working in dusty or fume-filled environments.
- Wear protective gear, including insulated gloves if working near electrical sources.
- Safe working practices:
- Keep a safe distance between hands and the saw blade.
- Do not start the blade until the machine has completely stopped.
- Do not place hands under the material being cut.
- Check for obstructing or oversized materials that could jam the blade before starting the machine.
- Machine inspection and maintenance:
- Regularly inspect the machine to ensure it operates safely and correctly.
- Perform scheduled maintenance, including blade replacement when necessary.
- Apply danger zone rules:
- Ensure no one else stands in the danger zone while the handheld jigsaw is operating.
- Operate in a safe environment:
- Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid flammable liquids or electrical sources.
- Monitoring and evaluation:
- Use the jigsaw under the supervision of experienced personnel and conduct regular evaluations to ensure safety.
- Periodic inspection of the handheld jigsaw to detect safety issues such as wear, tear, or mechanical failure, thereby reducing the risk of occupational accidents.
