1. Overview of light bulbs
a. What are light bulbs?
- A light bulb is a lighting device used to convert electrical energy into light. It consists of a glass or plastic bulb with a base and a light-emitting substance inside, usually a filament or gas, connected to electrical wires.
- When an electric current flows through the filament or gas, they are heated and emit light. Light bulbs have been used for over a century and are an indispensable part of people’s daily lives. However, with the development of technology, other lighting technologies such as LED and fluorescent lamps are becoming more popular.
- In Vietnam, the light bulb manufacturing industry had a strong development period in the 1990s and early 2000s, when businesses such as Dai Nam, Rang Dong, Minh Duc, Nam Kim, Dong Phong… invested heavily to produce yellow and white compact light bulbs, supplying the domestic and export markets. However, with fierce competition from foreign manufacturers along with the use of new lighting technologies, the light bulb manufacturing industry in Vietnam has faced many difficulties and declined in recent years.
b. Types of light bulb manufacturing machinery
The types of light bulb manufacturing machinery include:
- Cutting and separating machine for light bulb bases: used to cut light bulbs into smaller pieces, separate the base from the light bulb for subsequent assembly.
- Pressing machine for light bulb bases: used to press the light bulb base, creating an electrical connection from the bulb to the power source.
- Light bulb forming machine: used to form the light bulb, creating the final shape of the product.
- Light bulb quality inspection machine: used to check the quality of light bulbs after manufacturing. The inspection parameters include brightness, color, lifespan,…
- Logo and product label printing machine: used to print product information, logos, and labels on light bulbs.
c. Typical light bulb manufacturing enterprises
Currently, there are a number of typical light bulb manufacturing enterprises in Vietnam, including:
- A Chau Electric Lighting (Panasonic Lighting Vietnam): This is one of the pioneering companies in the field of light bulb manufacturing in Vietnam, with a team of professional engineers and a modern machinery system.
- Dien Quang Lamp: This is one of the largest enterprises in the light bulb manufacturing industry in Vietnam, with diverse and high-quality products.
- Rang Dong: Is one of the leading manufacturers of popular light bulbs in Vietnam, with a modern machinery and technology system.

d. Specific jobs in a light bulb factory
Group 1
- Executive directors, deputy executive directors, department heads in a light bulb factory.
Group 2
- Safety officer: manages safety in the factory, designs safety procedures, supervises and urges employees to comply with safe working procedures.
Group 3
- Cleaning and preparing components: Light bulb components such as filaments, glass bulbs, bolts, shields, spiral heads, and wires need to be cleaned and prepared before the manufacturing process begins.
- Making the bulb base: This is the first step in the light bulb manufacturing process. Employees use machinery to create the bulb base by cutting, bending, and twisting the wire.
- Making the glass bulb: After the bulb base is completed, the next step is to make the glass bulb. Employees use machinery to create the glass bulb, and then apply a protective coating to the glass bulb.
- Filament: Employees insert the filament inside the glass bulb, seal it tightly, and then add the bulb base to the head of the bulb.
- Inspection and quality control: All light bulbs must undergo a quality control process to ensure they work well and are safe.
- Packaging and shipping: After inspection and quality assurance, the light bulbs are packaged and shipped to dealers and customers.
Group 4
- Office work, serving, sales, marketing.
- Production management, quality management, human resource management, material management, financial accounting management.

b. Training time
First-time safety training time
- Total training time is at least 24 hours, including inspection time.
- 8 hours of theoretical study on the policy and legal system on occupational safety and health.
- 8 hours of theoretical study on basic knowledge of occupational safety and health.
- 4 hours of theoretical study on specialized training content.
- 2 hours of practice on specialized training content.
- 2 hours of theoretical inspection at the end of the training course.
The safety training center will distribute the time into many training sessions depending on the time arrangement for the employees. But usually, there will be 6 training sessions, the course will take place for 3 days, on the condition that the manufacturing enterprise can arrange continuous study time.
Periodic safety training time
- Before the occupational safety card expires, if the worker wants to renew it, they must go through a periodic occupational safety training course, with the periodic safety training time being at least 50% of the first-time safety training time.
Explanation: the total periodic occupational safety training time is at least 12 hours, including inspection time. After completing the periodic training course and passing the inspection, the worker will be reissued and the occupational safety card will be renewed.

d. Occupational safety card
After completing the occupational safety training course and passing the test, the worker will be issued an occupational safety card (actually often called a group 3 occupational safety certificate).
In which, the group 3 safety card will clearly show information such as: full name, date of birth, job and specific working environment. At the same time, there is also the training time, red stamp and signature confirming the completion of the training course.
According to the regulations on issuing safety cards specified in clause 2 of article 24 of decree 44/2016/ND-CP, there are 2 cases:
- In case the employer and the employee have a labor contract with each other, the employer must sign, stamp and seal the safety card for the person who has been trained in group 3 after going through the training course from the occupational safety training unit, and at the same time passing the test.
- In case, freelance, seasonal workers, without a labor contract, the training unit must sign, stamp and seal the safety card for the worker after going through the training course from the occupational safety training unit, and at the same time passing the test.

3. Identifying hazards when manufacturing light bulbs
During the light bulb manufacturing process, there are a number of potential hazards such as:
- High voltage used in the manufacturing and inspection of light bulbs can pose a danger to employees when not performed in accordance with safety procedures.
- Some chemicals used in the light bulb manufacturing process such as mercury and Argon gas can pose a health hazard to employees.
- During the manufacturing process, ultraviolet (UV) rays are used to activate the liquid in the light bulb. However, UV rays can also be harmful to the skin and eyes if employees do not wear protective glasses.
- The light bulb manufacturing process requires high temperatures and there is a risk of fire and explosion if not performed in accordance with safety procedures.
