1. Overview of metal welding and cutting work
a. What is metal welding and cutting?
- Metal welding and cutting is a method that combines two technologies, welding and cutting, to create a complete manufacturing process. This process involves burning gas or oxygen to create high temperature and pressure, generating an extremely hot flame to cut through metal materials. Once the metal is cut, the welding process is performed by using electricity to melt the metal ends that need to be joined. When the metal has melted, they will be joined and form a solid connection.
- Metal welding and cutting is an important method in metal manufacturing and is widely used in various industries such as machinery manufacturing, construction, automobile manufacturing, aerospace, and many other industries. This technique ensures that the cutting and welding of metal materials are performed with high precision and speed, which helps minimize production time and costs, and increases the durability and quality of metal products.
b. Machinery required for metal welding and cutting
Metal welding and cutting is performed by using high temperatures to join or separate metal parts. There are many different types of machinery used in the metal welding and cutting process, including:
- Stick welding machine: A stick welding machine uses an electric welding rod to join two metal parts. This is a simple and common method for welding and cutting metal parts of different thicknesses.
- MIG/MAG welding machine: A MIG/MAG welding machine uses a welding wire and shielding gas to join metal parts. This is a fast and effective method for welding and cutting metal parts.
- Plasma cutting machine: A plasma cutting machine uses a high-ionized gas stream to cut metal parts. This is a precise and fast method for cutting metal parts of different thicknesses.
- Laser cutting machine: A laser cutting machine uses a laser beam to cut metal parts. This is a very precise method and is used to cut thin and complex-shaped metal parts.
In addition, there are many other types of machinery such as TIG welding machines, oxy-acetylene cutting machines, waterjet cutting machines… to serve metal welding and cutting. However, depending on the purpose of use and the thickness of the metal, the user will choose the appropriate machinery.
2. Overview of the labor safety training course for metal welding and cutting
a. What is labor safety training for metal welding and cutting?

b. Training duration
Initial safety training duration
- The total training duration is at least 24 hours, including exam time.
- 8 hours of theoretical study on the policy and legal system for labor safety and sanitation
- 8 hours of theoretical study on basic knowledge of labor safety and sanitation
- 4 hours of theoretical study on specialized training content
- 2 hours of practical study on specialized training content
- 2 hours of theoretical exam at the end of the training course
The safety training center will distribute the time into many training sessions depending on the schedule for employees. But usually, there will be 6 training sessions, the course will take place over 3 days, provided that the manufacturing company can arrange continuous study time.
Periodic safety training duration
- Before the labor safety card expires, if an employee wants to renew it, they must undergo a periodic labor safety training course, with a periodic safety training duration of at least 50% of the initial safety training duration.
Explanation: The total periodic labor safety training duration is at least 12 hours, including exam time. After completing the periodic training course and passing the exam, the employee will be re-issued or have their labor safety card renewed.

d. Labor safety card
After completing the labor safety training course and passing the exam, the employee will be issued a labor safety card (also commonly known as the group 3 labor safety certificate).
The group 3 safety card will clearly state information such as: full name, date of birth, specific job and working environment. It also includes the training duration, a red seal, and the signature confirming completion of the training course.
According to the regulations on issuing safety cards stated in Clause 2 Article 24, Decree 44/2016/ND-CP, there are two cases:
- In the case where the employer and the employee have a labor contract with each other, the employer must sign, seal, and affix a joint seal to the safety card for the trained person belonging to group 3 after they have completed the training course from the labor safety training unit and passed the exam.
- In the case where the employee is a freelancer, seasonal worker, or does not have a labor contract, the training unit must sign, seal, and affix a joint seal to the safety card for the employee after they have completed the training course from the labor safety training unit and passed the exam.

3. Recognizing dangers when welding and cutting metal
The process of metal welding and cutting can cause many dangers to the person performing the work, including:
- Using materials such as gas, electricity, toxic liquids, flammable and explosive materials, and electrical equipment can create fire and explosion risks when in contact with heat sources.
- Using certain types of welding electrodes can cause ultraviolet rays and radiation, especially when used at high levels or improperly.
- The welding process can use chemicals such as metal coatings, dyes, and solvents. If not used correctly, these substances can be harmful to health and the environment.
- Toxic gases can be generated from the welding process, including carbon monoxide gas, argon gas, nitrogen gas, and acetylene gas.
- The process of metal welding and cutting often requires the use of dangerous tools and machinery such as welding machines, cutting machines, polishing tools, and other handheld tools. Improper use of equipment and tools or lack of experience can also lead to serious labor accidents.
4. Safety measures for metal welding and cutting
Metal welding and cutting is a high-risk activity if not performed correctly and with full safety measures. Here are some safety measures that must be followed when performing metal welding and cutting work:
- Use personal protective equipment: The person performing metal welding and cutting must ensure the full use of protective equipment such as safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, flame-resistant clothing, safety shoes, welding mask, etc.
- Use tools correctly: Use metal welding and cutting tools correctly and maintain them regularly to ensure quality and safety during use.
- Choose quality metal: Choose metal of the correct quality and size to ensure that welding and cutting are performed accurately and safely.
- Perform in a well-ventilated space: Perform welding and cutting work in a well-ventilated space to ensure good airflow and avoid the risk of fire and explosion.
- Use gas cylinders correctly: Use gas cylinders correctly and fully comply with safety measures when using them.
- Have a fire prevention and fighting plan: Be fully equipped with fire prevention and fighting equipment and have a plan for using them when necessary.
- Labor safety training: Train employees who perform metal welding and cutting on the necessary labor safety measures.
- Periodically organize labor environment monitoring in factories and businesses, collect and analyze harmful factors for employees, thereby adjusting to reduce the level of harm to prevent occupational diseases for them.
5. Types of accidents when welding and cutting metal
Common types of accidents when welding and cutting metal include:
- Fire and explosion: Due to high temperatures and oxygen gas, flammable substances can be activated and ignite or explode.
- Toxicity: When welding and cutting metal, flammable gas is used to create high temperatures, producing toxic smoke and fumes, which can cause headaches, dizziness, and difficulty breathing for the welder.
- Burn: If gas leaks from the torch or gas hose, it can cause a fire.
- Burns: Hot steam and the welded or cut metal surface can cause burns to the welder.
- Gas cylinder explosion: If a gas cylinder is not regularly inspected or is punctured, it can lead to a gas cylinder explosion, which is dangerous for the welder and those around them.
