Two hands were severed while repairing a machine in Ho Chi Minh City on February 27, 2023

A 43-year-old male patient was repairing a metal cutting machine when a colleague started the machine, causing both of his arms to be severed.

On February 26, a representative of the Orthopedic and Traumatology Hospital said the patient was admitted in a state of hemorrhagic shock, with a blood pressure of 90/60.

An examination of the patient’s history showed that a day earlier, the patient was repairing a metal cutting machine when a colleague started the machine, completely severing the man’s two forearms. He was given first aid by colleagues and company medical staff, and then taken to the hospital.

Initially, the patient was resuscitated with a blood transfusion, oxygen, and a urinary catheter. The subsequent 6-hour surgery successfully reattached the severed parts of the patient’s arms.

The on-call team stated that this was an unusual case where negligence led to the complete severance of both forearms.

“Furthermore, it is still too early to talk about the success of the surgery. In the following days, the patient will continue to receive resuscitation, fluids, antibiotics, and monitoring for the viability of the hands and fingers, as well as for issues of infection and muscle necrosis,” the doctor said.

Currently, the patient is being monitored and resuscitated in the intensive care unit (ICU), is conscious, has stable vital signs, and both hands are showing signs of viability.
