While working at a construction site, a 30-year-old male worker in Tay Ninh fell onto scaffolding and was impaled in the neck by a metal rod, in critical condition.

On January 10, 2023, Xuyen A General Hospital (Tay Ninh) demonstrated professional emergency response by saving a 30-year-old male worker in critical condition after being impaled by a metal rod on scaffolding.

The tragedy occurred while working at the construction site when the 30-year-old worker sustained a severe injury from a metal rod after falling onto the scaffolding. The injury was identified as a rod piercing through the neck and lower jaw, approximately 4 cm in diameter and 30 cm in length. After first aid at a nearby medical facility, the patient was transferred to Xuyen A General Hospital in Tay Ninh and successfully resuscitated.

Unfortunately, while working at the site, the male worker fell onto scaffolding and was impaled in the neck by a metal rod. Immediately, the emergency team at Xuyen A General Hospital in Tay Ninh rushed to the scene, activated a red alert, and began on-site emergency care.

Imaging results showed a cylindrical radiopaque foreign object in the soft tissue of the left lower jaw area, about 4 cm in transverse diameter, oriented from top to bottom and left to right, with a fractured lower jaw and grade IV splenic contusion, large amount of abdominal fluid, accompanied by pulmonary contusion.

After a specialist consultation, doctors diagnosed internal bleeding, grade IV splenic rupture, and a complex penetrating neck injury, with a very critical prognosis.

The patient faced a highly risky challenge, requiring transfer to the operating room to remove the foreign object and repair the lower jaw. Failure could lead to the worst consequences, but if successful, the patient would be transferred to the DSA room for vascular protection and life preservation.

After the procedure, the patient was moved to intensive care. Currently, the patient’s condition is gradually stabilizing and is being monitored and treated in the General Surgery Department.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Sang, Deputy Head of General Surgery – Xuyen A General Hospital, Tay Ninh, advises that to avoid unfortunate and life-threatening workplace accidents, workers should equip themselves with necessary protective gear and comply with safety regulations. In the event of an accident, bystanders should calmly provide proper first aid, avoid attempting to remove foreign objects from wounds (such as a metal rod piercing the neck), carefully stabilize the object, and quickly transport the victim to the nearest medical facility.
