On the afternoon of September 30, 2022, at the construction site of the My Thuan 2 Bridge project, workers were constructing tower pier T16. While working, the working platform in that area suddenly collapsed at one end, causing three workers to fall into the Tien River. The incident occurred due to broken welds. Fortunately, two workers were rescued and brought ashore by the rescue team without injuries. However, another worker, who could not swim, was swept away by the current. The rescue team continued searching for two days and nights, and finally, the victim’s body was found about 6 km from the accident site.

The two workers who were lucky to be rescued after falling into the river were Ho Sy Thanh (born 1983, from Quynh Luu district, Nghe An province) and Tran Quoc Vuong (born 1986, from Cai Be district, Tien Giang province), working at a construction site near the Tien River. However, worker Tran Thanh C (born 1993, from Thua Thien Hue province) was unfortunately swept away and is still being actively searched for.

Immediately after the accident, police and construction workers at the My Thuan 2 Bridge site searched for Tran Thanh C but could not locate him.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the Chairman of the Vinh Long Provincial People’s Committee, Lu Quang Ngoi, directed the Vinh Long Provincial Police and the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs to the site to clarify the situation. At the same time, he requested the Vinh Long Provincial Police to mobilize forces and equipment to search for the missing worker.

For more than 38 hours after the incident, a team of volunteers, including rescue experts, local residents, and company employees, mobilized all available resources to search for the victim. They used professional tools and techniques to search in the Tien River and along the riverbank. Their efforts were highly appreciated and praised for their organization and determination in the rescue operation.

Urgent search for the accident victim at night

Any suspicious objects in the Tien River were carefully inspected with flashlights by the search team.

However, the accident location in the Tien River, with its fast-flowing current, made the search extremely difficult.

By around 4 PM on October 2, the rescue team found the body of Tran Thanh C on the Co Chien River branch near Cai Son Be Bridge (in Vinh Long City, Vinh Long Province), about 6 km from the accident site. After the victim was found, the police coordinated with relevant units to conduct the examination before handing over the body to the family for burial.
