Occupational Safety Training Duration

The duration of occupational safety training is the amount of time workers are trained in occupational safety. The duration can be short or long, depending on the training content and target groups.

I. Initial Occupational Safety Training Duration

Workers involved in the labor process must undergo occupational safety training. Each specific group of workers has different training contents corresponding to appropriate training durations.

Below is the initial occupational safety training duration for each group:

1. Group 1 Training Duration

• Total training duration is at least 16 hours, including testing time.
• 8 hours of theory on policies and laws on occupational safety and hygiene.
• 7 hours of theory on occupational safety and hygiene work procedures.
• 1 hour of theory test at the end of the training course.

The Occupational Safety Training Center will arrange the training schedule into multiple sessions depending on the employer’s arrangement for the workers. Usually, there are 4 training sessions for Group 1, held over 2 days with 2 sessions per day, provided the manufacturing company can organize continuous training time.

2. Group 2 Training Duration

• Total training duration is at least 48 hours, including testing time.
• 8 hours of theory on policies and laws on occupational safety and hygiene.
• 23 hours of theory on occupational safety and hygiene work procedures.
• 4 hours of practice on occupational safety and hygiene work procedures.
• 1 hour of test on occupational safety and hygiene work procedures.
• 6 hours of theory on specialized training content.
• 2 hours of practice on specialized training content.
• 2 hours of theory test at the end of the training course.
• 2 hours of practice test at the end of the training course.

The training center will arrange the schedule into multiple sessions based on the employer’s arrangement. Typically, Group 2 training consists of 12 sessions, spanning 6 days, if continuous training time can be arranged.

3. Group 3 Training Duration

• Total training duration is at least 24 hours, including testing time.
• 8 hours of theory on policies and laws on occupational safety and hygiene.
• 8 hours of theory on basic knowledge of occupational safety and hygiene.
• 4 hours of theory on specialized training content.
• 2 hours of practice on specialized training content.
• 2 hours of theory test at the end of the training course.

The training center usually arranges 6 sessions over 3 days for Group 3, provided continuous training is possible.

4. Group 4 Training Duration

• Total training duration is at least 16 hours, including testing time.
• 8 hours of theory on basic knowledge of occupational safety and hygiene.
• 6 hours of practice directly at the workplace.
• 2 hours of theory test at the end of the training course.

Typically, Group 4 has 4 sessions over 2 days if continuous training can be arranged.

5. Group 5 Training Duration

• Total training duration is at least 16 hours, including testing time.
• 8 hours of theory on policies and laws on occupational safety and hygiene.
• 7 hours of theory on occupational safety and hygiene work procedures.
• 1 hour of theory test at the end of the training course.

Usually, there are 4 sessions for Group 5 over 2 days, provided continuous training is possible.

6. Group 6 Training Duration

Workers participating in the safety and hygiene network, in addition to the prescribed occupational safety and hygiene training, will receive supplementary training as follows:

• Total training duration is at least 4 hours, including testing time.
• 3 hours of theory on skills and methods for safety and hygiene staff activities.
• 1 hour of test at the end of the training course.

Typically, Group 6 training is completed in one session.

II. Validity Period of Occupational Safety Training Certificates

Regulations on the validity of occupational safety certificates are specified in Article 25 of Decree 44/2016/ND-CP and its amendments at Decree 140/2018/ND-CP.

1. Training certificates and Safety cards have a validity of 2 years.
2. For Group 4, the validity of the training monitoring book is 1 year, as stipulated in Clause 2, Article 21 of Decree 44/2016/ND-CP.
3. Within 30 days before the expiration of the certificate, safety card, or training monitoring book for Group 4, the employer must prepare a list of people for renewal, attached with the training results or documents proving updated knowledge and skills on occupational safety and hygiene according to Clause 1, Article 21 of Decree 44/2016/ND-CP, and send it to the training organization or conduct self-training according to regulations in Articles 26 and 29 of Decree 44/2016/ND-CP. If the training results meet requirements, new certificates, safety cards, or monitoring books will be issued accordingly.

III. Periodic Occupational Safety Training Duration

Before the occupational safety training certificate expires, workers who want to renew must undergo a periodic occupational safety training course, with the periodic training duration being at least 50% of the initial training duration.

Periodic occupational safety training serves to remind workers to always stay alert to potential hazards, work according to safety procedures, recognize and prevent risks during production. Additionally, the periodic training helps enterprises minimize negligence and loss of vigilance in implementing occupational safety and hygiene.
