1. Overview of Coffins
a. What is a coffin?
A coffin, also called a casket, is a large box used to hold the body of a deceased person. Coffins are typically made of wood or other materials such as metal, plastic, fiberglass, or cardboard. They usually have a rectangular shape and are decorated in various styles depending on culture and religion. Coffins serve to protect the body from natural elements and facilitate transportation, funeral, and burial processes.
In many cultures and religions, coffins are considered an important part of the burial process and hold religious and spiritual significance. For example, in Christianity, coffins are often decorated with symbols of faith such as Jesus Christ or saints; in Buddhism, coffins are made from bamboo or wood and decorated simply according to Buddhist traditions; in Chinese culture, coffins are often adorned with feng shui symbols such as dragons, phoenixes, turtles, and tortoises to bring luck and peace to the deceased.
b. Machinery used in coffin production
In the coffin production process, various machines and equipment are used to increase productivity and efficiency. These include:
- Saws: used to cut and shape wood panels into coffin components.
- Polishing machines: used to smooth and polish coffin parts after cutting and shaping.
- Drills: used to drill holes for handles and other accessories on the coffin.
- Printers: used to print images, text, or religious symbols on the coffin surface.
- Engraving machines: used to carve symbols, text, or decorative patterns onto the coffin.
- Welding machines: used to weld metal parts on the coffin.
- Press machines: used to press wood or metal components together.
- Sterilization machines: used to sterilize coffins before delivery to families.
These machines are commonly used in coffin factories to enhance productivity and product quality.

2. Overview of Occupational Safety Training for Coffin Production
This article focuses on Group 3, as Group 3 directly participates in production and is exposed to the highest occupational safety risks. For information on other groups, see here.
a. What is Group 3 occupational safety training?
- Group 3 occupational safety training consists of sessions that raise awareness on accident prevention for workers.
- These training courses help workers identify and avoid hazards, reducing risks of workplace accidents during production.

b. Training duration
Initial safety training:
- Total training time at least 24 hours, including assessment time.
- 8 hours of theory on safety policies and labor hygiene laws
- 8 hours of theory on basic occupational safety knowledge
- 4 hours of theory on specialized training content
- 2 hours of practical exercises on specialized content
- 2 hours of final theory assessment
The training center schedules sessions depending on workers’ availability, usually 6 sessions over 3 days, if the company can arrange continuous learning time.
Periodic safety training:
- Before the occupational safety card expires, workers seeking renewal must undergo periodic occupational safety training, with training time of at least 50% of the initial training duration.
Explanation: Total periodic safety training time is at least 12 hours, including assessment. Upon completion and passing the test, workers receive a renewed occupational safety card.

Upon completing the occupational safety training and passing the assessment, workers will receive a Group 3 occupational safety card (commonly called Group 3 occupational safety certificate).
The Group 3 safety card includes personal information such as full name, date of birth, job title, and specific work environment, along with training duration, official stamp, and signature confirming course completion.
According to regulations in Clause 2, Article 24 of Decree 44/2016/ND-CP, there are two cases:
- If the worker has a labor contract with the employer, the employer must sign, stamp, and validate the safety card for Group 3 workers after completing the training and passing the assessment.
- If the worker is freelance or temporary, without a labor contract, the training organization must sign, stamp, and validate the safety card after the worker completes the training and passes the assessment.

3. Identifying Hazards Affecting Workers in Coffin Production
Coffin production is a hazardous job that can adversely affect workers’ health. Specific hazards include:
- Exposure to toxic chemicals: During production, workers may be exposed to harmful chemicals such as glue, dyes, flame retardants, and paints. Long-term exposure to these substances can cause serious health problems, including cancer and respiratory diseases.
- Exposure to dust and cutting fumes: While cutting and grinding coffin parts, workers may inhale dust and fumes. Prolonged exposure can lead to respiratory issues, such as asthma and pneumonia.
- Risk of occupational accidents: Equipment used in coffin production, such as cutting machines, grinders, and air compressors, can cause serious workplace accidents.
- Safety and hygiene issues: Factory tasks often involve lifting, moving, and transporting heavy coffin parts, which can lead to back injuries and workplace accidents.
- Risk from metals: Metal parts used to construct coffin frames may pose hazards to workers during production.
4. Common Workplace Accidents in Coffin Production
Common accidents during coffin production may include:
- Injury from impact: Workers may be injured by contact with cutting, filing, drilling tools, or nails.
- Hand cuts: Workers may cut their hands while cutting and processing wood.
