1. Overview of Laser Engraving Machines
a. What is a Laser Engraving Machine?
A laser engraving machine is a type of device that uses laser technology to create marks or engrave images, text, or patterns on a material. This technology is commonly used in various applications, including beauty, product crafting, industry, medicine, and many other fields.
The operating principle of a laser engraving machine is to use an extremely powerful laser beam to create a thermal effect on the material. When the laser touches the material, the energy from the laser is converted into heat, causing charring, vaporization, or structural changes in the material. As a result, you can create marks, images, or text on the material surface accurately and with high quality.
Laser engraving machines can be used on a wide range of materials such as wood, plastic, metal, leather, glass, mirrors, and many other materials. They are widely used to create commercially valuable products, art, personal gifts, and in crafting and advertising industries to produce signs, jewelry, wooden products, and many other applications.
b. Applications of Laser Engraving Machines in Manufacturing
Laser engraving machines have many applications in the manufacturing sector due to their accuracy, reliability, and high working speed. Below are some common applications of laser engraving machines in production:
- Wood product fabrication: Laser engraving machines are used to create customized wood products such as furniture, decorations, gift boxes, and other wooden items. They can engrave or cut wood precisely and beautifully.
- Metal fabrication: Laser engraving machines can be used to engrave or cut metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and other metals. This is useful in manufacturing metal components and products.

d. Occupational Safety Card
After completing the occupational safety training course and passing the assessment, employees will be issued a safety card (commonly called Group 3 safety certificate).
The Group 3 card shows information such as full name, date of birth, job, and specific working environment. It also includes training duration, red stamp, and signature confirming course completion.
According to regulations on safety card issuance in Clause 2 of Article 24, Decree 44/2016/ND-CP, there are two cases:
- If the employer and employee have a labor contract, the employer must sign, stamp, and endorse the safety card for Group 3 employees after they complete the training and pass the assessment.
- If the employee is freelance or temporary without a labor contract, the training unit must sign, stamp, and endorse the safety card after the employee completes the training and passes the assessment.

3. Hazards when operating laser engraving machines
Operating a laser engraving machine can involve certain hazards and requires caution. Below are some common hazards when operating a laser engraving machine:
- Laser beam: The laser beam can cause burns, eye, and skin injuries if not handled carefully. Operators must follow safety rules and always ensure no one is exposed to the laser beam while the machine is running.
- Smoke and toxic gases: Laser engraving and cutting can produce smoke and toxic gases. Operators should ensure proper ventilation and work in a comfortable environment to avoid inhaling harmful gases.
- High temperature: Lasers generate high temperatures during operation. Operators need to be cautious to avoid direct contact with hot surfaces and ensure there is no risk of fire or explosion due to high temperature.
- Toxic materials: Some materials, when engraved or cut by a laser, can generate toxic dust or gases. This is especially important when working with plastics, wood, and certain metals.
- Adhesion: During engraving, materials may create sticky residues on lenses and laser mirrors, reducing machine performance and requiring regular maintenance.
- Electrical safety: Laser engraving machines often require high power to operate. Operators need to check the electrical system and ensure it meets safety standards.
- Training: Laser engraving machine operators must be carefully trained on how to use the machine, safety rules, and risk prevention measures.
- Maintenance: To ensure safe and efficient operation, regular maintenance and technical inspections are very important.
All these hazards can be minimized or completely prevented by adhering to safety rules, proper training, and regular technical inspections.
4. Measures to prevent workplace accidents when operating laser engraving machines
To control and prevent workplace accidents when operating laser engraving machines, below are some important measures to follow:
- Training: Ensure all operators and personnel working around the laser engraving machine are fully trained on machine use, safety rules, and troubleshooting. This includes understanding how to work with laser beams, handling toxic materials, and responding to emergency situations.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE): Provide PPE for operators, including laser safety goggles, face shields, ear protection, and protective clothing when necessary. Ensure all personnel around the machine are equipped with appropriate PPE.
- Inspection and maintenance: Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of laser engraving machines to ensure safe and efficient operation. This includes checking key components, ensuring ventilation filters work properly, and removing any dust buildup.
- Material management: Check materials before placing them in the machine to ensure they do not pose hazards such as producing toxic gases, harmful smoke, or fire/explosion risks.
- Laser beam exposure control: Ensure no one is exposed to the laser beam while the machine is operating. Use protective barriers or safety enclosures to prevent laser beam escape.
- Work process management: Define safe work procedures, including proper material placement and machine setup, to ensure operators and nearby personnel are not at risk.
- Fire and explosion prevention: When using lasers in flammable applications, follow safety rules for storing and handling combustible materials.
- First aid and emergency response: Ensure there is a first aid and emergency response plan, and all staff are trained to handle emergency situations when necessary.
- Periodic inspection of laser engraving machines to detect safety issues such as mechanical wear or failures early, thereby reducing the risk of workplace accidents.
