1. Overview of phones
a. What is a phone?
- A phone is a mobile device used for communication between people through wireless phone waves. It’s designed to allow users to connect with each other from anywhere in the world through a mobile network or a fixed telephone network.
- Phones can be used to make voice calls, send messages, access the internet, take photos, record audio, and many other features. Popular types of phones today include smartphones and feature phones.
- Currently, the phone manufacturing industry in Vietnam is experiencing strong growth, especially in the field of smartphone manufacturing.
- According to statistics from the General Statistics Office, phone manufacturing in Vietnam has grown strongly in recent years. In 2020, Vietnam produced about 200 million phones, an increase of 4.4% compared to the same period in the previous year. Phones manufactured in Vietnam are mainly exported to other markets around the world.
- Since 2021, the Vietnamese Government has also launched a support program for businesses in the electronics and telecommunications industry (including phone manufacturing) to create favorable conditions for businesses to enhance their manufacturing capacity and compete in the international market. Specifically, this support program includes many measures, thereby helping businesses in this industry invest in research, product development, improve product quality, enhance the manufacturing process, increase productivity, and manufacturing efficiency.
- Tablets can also have similar functions to phones, depending on the features and software installed on the tablet. However, tablets usually have larger screens and do not have a direct calling feature, unless connected to the internet through applications like Skype or Messenger. Tablets can be used to browse the web, send emails, watch videos, play games, read e-books, and perform many other tasks, similar to a mobile phone or laptop. However, tablets often have a different design that may be more suitable for different usage needs such as reading, watching movies, or working on a mobile computer.
b. Types of phone manufacturing machines
The types of phone manufacturing machines depend on the manufacturing scale and the manufacturing stage. However, some key machines can be mentioned such as:
- Metal cutting machine: to cut metal into the necessary sizes and shapes for phone components like the frame, back cover, power button, fingerprint sensor, etc.
- Molding machine: to mold parts like the frame, back cover, casing, accessories, etc.
- Screen pressing machine: to press the screen with the touch glass to create a complete screen.
- Soldering machine: to solder components like the battery, camera, screen, microphone, etc., onto the motherboard.
- Testing machine: to test the features and quality of the phone before packaging and shipping.
- Packaging machine: to package and protect the phone products before being shipped to users.
In addition, phone manufacturers also use other auxiliary machines such as printing machines, labeling machines, screen sticker machines, video cameras, cameras, etc., to produce electronic products.

b. Training time
Initial safety training time
- The total training time is at least 24 hours, including the examination time.
- 8 hours of theoretical study on the system of policies and laws on occupational safety and hygiene
- 8 hours of theoretical study on basic knowledge of occupational safety and hygiene
- 4 hours of theoretical study on specialized training content
- 2 hours of practical training on specialized training content
- 2 hours of theoretical examination at the end of the training course
The safety training center will distribute the time into several training sessions depending on the time arrangement for the employees. But usually, there will be 6 training sessions, and the course will take place over 3 days, on the condition that the manufacturing company can arrange continuous study time.
Periodic safety training time
- Before the occupational safety card expires, if an employee wants to renew it, they must go through a periodic occupational safety training course, with a periodic safety training time of at least 50% of the initial safety training time.
Explanation: The total periodic occupational safety training time is at least 12 hours, including the examination time. After completing the periodic training course and passing the exam, the employee will be re-issued or renewed their occupational safety card.

3. Identifying hazards when manufacturing phones
The hazards when manufacturing phones can include:
- During the manufacturing process, chemicals such as solvents, adhesives, dyes, and polymers used to make the phone’s electronic components can pose a health hazard to workers.
- The phone manufacturing process involves the use of electrical and electronic equipment, which if not maintained and checked regularly can cause electrical problems like electrical leaks, short circuits, leading to fires and explosions.
- Work related to screen manufacturing and other electronic devices can be affected by ultraviolet radiation, which is harmful to the health of the workers.
- Machinery and equipment can be dangerous to users if not operated correctly or not maintained periodically.
- Occupational accidents can occur during the manufacturing process, such as injuries, cuts, burns, etc., from using sharp equipment or tools used in the manufacturing process.
4. Common occupational accidents in phone manufacturing
Occupational accidents in the phone manufacturing industry are often related to the use of machinery, equipment, especially large and complex machines like molding machines, plastic extruders, cutting machines, metalworking machines, and other hand tools. Common accidents in the phone manufacturing industry include:
- Injuries, pain, and scratches from colliding with machine parts.
- More seriously, accidents can lead to traumatic brain injury, broken bones, spinal cord damage, or even death.
In addition, workers also face the risk of chemical poisoning from chemicals during the manufacturing process, especially during assembly, soldering, and painting. Common chemical products such as solvents, adhesives, and detergents can pose a health hazard to those who come into direct contact with them.
5. Safety measures when participating in phone manufacturing
To ensure safety for workers during the phone manufacturing process, the following safety measures can be applied:
- Workers must be provided with personal protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, masks, and safety shoes to ensure safety for manufacturing activities.
