1. Overview of cigarettes
a. What is a cigarette?
- A cigarette is a food product containing tobacco leaves (usually Nicotiana tabacum leaves) that are dried and finely cut, then wrapped in cigarette paper or in a small tube for smoking. When burned, a cigarette produces smoke containing toxic chemicals such as nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, ammonia, and many other substances. Cigarettes are often used for smoking and inhaling into the lungs, creating a relaxing and stimulating feeling for the user. However, cigarette use can cause many health harms, such as cancer, lung disease, cardiovascular and respiratory problems, and negative effects on fetal development if used by pregnant women.
- Tobacco manufacturing enterprises in Vietnam also face pressure from non-governmental organizations and the community to control and minimize the negative impact of cigarettes on public health. In an effort to meet these requirements, many enterprises have implemented measures to improve products, including improving the quality of tobacco and reducing the content of nicotine and other harmful substances. In addition, enterprises have also turned to alternative tobacco products and other products such as e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.
